The Vol de Nuit (Night Flight) closing party at Yoko is not an ending to a festival, but a take off point for future prospects and exciting new trajectories.

Time Keeper is the brainchild of two young veterans of the Saigon music underground. Their sound draws influence from a menagerie of styles and genres—it places the listeners in a distinct landscape where soaring guitar leads and delicate arpeggios intermingle with electronic and ambient underpinnings. Compositional elements from classical music are colored by experimental flourishes and flights of fancy.

 
Award-winning sound designer and electronic musician Malek Lopez is considered one of the vanguards of live electronic music in Manila. He was part of the critical electronic music collaboration anthology, Asia-Pacific Plate. He has showcased his chops around the world, in venues as diverse as hole-in-the wall dives in Manila's musical underbelly, swank venues in Europe, and the even swankier National Museum of Singapore.

Tad Ermitano is a pioneering media artist from Manila who uses sound, video, programming, and electronics in the creation of his films, videos, installations, and performances. Exhibiting and performing internationally, his current projects explore algorithmic/procedural composition, new trajectories for the moving image, and elementary robotics. 

 
Tad and Malek's collaborations in Yoko will give a live demonstration to their pioneering work in OpenSoundControl and networked computer performance. Their performance promises to straddle the fine lines between improvisation and presequencing, rhythmic-tonal-visual modality, and synesthetic abstraction in an audiovisual collaboration analogous to multi-player gaming.

Mysterious singer-songwriter Munro explores dissimilar terrains in music and turns them into something familiar. Weaving together theatrics, shadow play, and song in her usual performances, a relatively stripped down version of Munro’s show will be explored in Vol de Nuit in collaboration with Tad and Malek’s performance.

Capping it all off on a non-musical note: it is the last day of the DIY stencils (streets-to-shirts!) workshop by street artists Liar Ben and un escargot vide?, with special guest 4GET from Hong Kong.

Tiệc bế mạc của Vol de Nuit (Bay Đêm) tại Yoko không phải là dấu chấm hết cho lễ hội này, mà là điểm khởi đầu cho những triển vọng và sự phát triển trong tương lai.

Âm thanh và hiệu ứng hình ảnh sẽ được trình diễn bời Time Keeper, Malek Lopez, Tad Ermitano và Munro.

Time Keeper là đứa con tinh thần của hai cựu binh trong làng nhạc độc lập Sài Gòn. Âm thanh của họ mang âm hưởng hỗn hợp từ các thể loại khác nhau; điện tử, ambient, cổ điển hoà trộn với một số yếu tố thử nghiệm.

Nhạc sĩ nhạc điện tử đồng thời là nhà thiết kế âm thanh có giải thưởng Malek Lopez được coi như là một trong những tiên phong trong làng trình diễn electronics ở Manila. Anh là một phần của bộ sưu tập nhạc electronics nổi tiếng, Asia-Pacific Plate. Anh đã lưu diễn ở nhiếu nơi trên thế giới, ở nhiều dạng sân khấu khác nhau, từ những sàn nhạc khiêm tốn ở Manila, cho đến các sân khấu tráng lệ ở Âu Châu, và cả Viện Bảo Tàng Quốc Gia Singapore.

Tad Ermitano là một nghệ sĩ tiên phong từ Manila, anh dùng âm thanh, hình ảnh, và nhạc electronics để tạo nên những đoạn film hay video hoạc các chương trình biểu diễn. Các dự án hiện tại của anh (đang được trình diễn ở nhiều nơi trên thế giới) khai thác sự sáng tác theo thuật toán tin học, khai thác các hình ảnh chuyển động kiểu mới và tự động học.

Sự kết hợp giữa Tad và Malek ở Yoko sẽ mang lại cho thính giả buổi trình diễn công nghệ OpenSoundControl và kết nối máy tính. Đó là sự kết hợp giữa sự ứng tác và lập trình của âm thanh, sự kết hợp được lập trình giữa âm thanh và hình ảnh chuyển động, và sự kết hợp giữa nhiều máy tính, theo một sự tương tác gần giống sự tương tác giữa các máy trong game online.

Ca sĩ-nhạc sĩ Munro khai thác những yếu tố khác lạ trong âm nhạc và biến chúng thành những thứ thân thuộc với người nghe. Cô sẽ kết hợp nhuần nhuyễn các bài hát của cô với các yếu tố kịch nghệ, trong sự phối hợp với Tad và Malek tại Vol de Nuit lần này.

Vol De Nuit | Night Flight 2013: SolarSoundSystem Presentation + DJ set @ Decibel

✈ SolarSoundSystem presentation and DJ set by Vialka’s Eric Boros (FR) and artist-designer Cédric Carles (CH)

Vialka’s Eric Boros and Swiss artist-designer Cédric Carles will give a short presentation about their collaborative project, SolarSoundSystem, a mobile solar-powered sound unit. Endorsed by the United Nations Foundation in 2012, SolarSoundSystem is now creating an international network of solar and renewable-energy powered sound systems… and Vietnam is right on their agenda.

The presentation segues into a gloriously Pan-Global Mash-Up of a DJ set by both artists, featuring a groovy cacophony of East Wave and Unternational Sounds.

SolarSoundSystem emerged from three like-minded individuals. The nomadic and virtually unclassifiable French musical duo Vialka (Eric Boros and Marylise Frecehville) is not just a musical project, but also a social scientific experiment, attempting to meet, communicate and work with extraordinary and little-known musicians and artists from everywhere and nowhere. And Cédric Carles has systematically integrated eco-design in all of his products, services, and projects since 1999.

 With its on-site construction of custom and open-source DIY modules, the SolarSoundSystem project is now looking for collaborators and local partners around the world to establish and exemplify a link between sustainable development and culture, bringing to attention energy-related and environmental problems, and offering a space for artistic expression independent of the electric grid.

Eric Boros thuộc nhóm Vialka và nhà thiết kế mỹ thuật Thuỵ sĩ Cédric Carles sẽ thực hiện một bài thuyết trình ngắn về dự án của họ, SolarSoundSystem, một hệ thống âm thanh di động dùng năng lượng mặt trời. a mobile solar-powered sound unit. Được đỡ đầu bời United Nations Foundation vào năm 2012, SolarSoundSystem hiện đang dẫn đầu phong trào sử dụng các hệ thống âm thanh dùng pin mặt trời hay các nguồn năng lượng sạch. Và Việt Nam là một phần trong chương trình của họ.

Ngay sau đó sẽ là màn trình diễn âm nhạc ấn tượng của 2 DJ này với các âm thanh hỗn độn nhưng đầy phong cách của East Wave và Unternational Sounds.

SolarSoundSystem được hình thành từ ba khối óc, nhóm Vialka của Pháp (Eric Boros v Marylise Frecehville). Họ không chỉ là một dự án âm nhạc, mà còn là một trải nghiệm khoa học và xã hội học, kết hợp làm việc với các nhạc sĩ khắp nơi trên thế giới. Còn Cédric Carles đã luôn tích hợp thiết kế thân thiện môi trường vào các sản phẩm, dịch vụ và dự án của anh từ 1999.

Với các mô đun dễ lắp ráp tại chỗ, SolarSoundSystem đang thiết lập một mạng lưới hợp tác với các nhạc sĩ từ nhiều nơi trên thế giới để khuyến khích việc quan tâm tới văn hoá và môi trường, quan tâm tới các vấn đe năng lượng, và tạo cho nghệ sĩ môi trường trình diễn không phụ thuộc vào nguồn điện.

 ||Vol de Nuit (Night Flight)|| is an art platform in collaboration with Vietnamese and international artists.
This platform posits interactions and connections across cultures, using artistic self-exploration as a vehicle to push onwards into new and uncharted territories, both real and imaginary. It is an attempt to cultivate a fellowship of artists emerging from different backgrounds, different interests, and different creative approaches.

The manifestation of passion and ideas expressed in collaborative and collective works will bring new dimensions to the ongoing quest to negotiate different origins, cultures, and histories—intertwined with varied memories of contact and conflict between nations + civilizations—as we navigate the precarious fluxus of both modern and future existence.

Vol de Nuit takes its name from French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s prize-winning novel of the same name, first published in 1931. However, the platform does not take the context and characters of the novel as inspiration, but more broadly, the desire to foment and engage metaphorical flights of exploration and discovery in the context of investigating and amalgamating distinct cultures alongside local and peripheral relations -  fostering both human and artistic interactions by eliminating the physical and cultural boundaries that separate us all.

Vol de Nuit brings together artists with their own unique methods, techniques, and media focuses onto the same platform. It highlights the entire process from creation to exhibition, with workshops and collaborative experiments that will attempt to convey an openness and intimacy between the artists and the larger cultural community. The platform includes objects, sound installations, light installations, real-time video creation and manipulation, as well as several musical performances. The interdisciplinary yet intimate nature of the platform seeks to deepen shared understanding by unraveling the mysteries and varied experiences that constitute artistic creation.

Vol de Nuit—a platform with a French name, organized in Vietnam, with the participation of Vietnamese and international artists. Such a robust mix might perplex our audience, but that is part of what we intend to convey: the idea of a new world as one borderless living space, with all the subsequent shifts and transformations and their irreversible impact on local/original cultures. We intend to convey the innate desire to seek commonality and harmony, but at the same time acknowledge the underlying danger, uncertainty, and anxiety, mixed with anticipation and eagerness, that accompanies new destinations, new horizons, and new mysteries—much like flying in the dark.

A visceral Vietnamese drama of two soldiers from the north and the south, both saved by the same women whose only child was just killed in the artillery barrages. She nurses the two enemies back to health, beginning a saga of loneliness and misery which will lead to her losing her land to developers twenty years later as she is forced to dig up her child's coffin and bear it to the pagoda in her old age.

A daring and jarring story of war, loss, promises and betrayal. Accompanied by the lightbox sand painting of Tri Duc, the mounds of the dead set the stage for a tragic story of two warring brothers and the women who suffers for all.
